From Vermont's Green Mountains to New York's Adirondacks, there's no shortage of prime places to glimpse autumn's annual show in its multihued prime.
Stowe, Vt.: Take Green Mountains, throw in small-town charm, and you've got a classic New England foliage destination. Bask in the autumnal beauty of rural Vermont at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe. Set at the forested foot of Mount Mansfield - at 4,393 feet, the state's tallest peak - Topnotch is close to an abundance of seasonal highlights, such as gondola rides to the peak of the mountain with 20-mile views to Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks, visits to nearby Cold Hollow Cider Mill for fresh-pressed apple cider and nearby access to exceptional hiking trails, including the Long Trail, a 265-mile system running throughout the state.
FYI: Fall rates at Topnotch Resort and Spa start at $335 per night. Visit www.topnotchresort.com. Vermont Foliage Hotline: 800-VERMONT.
Smoky Mountains of North Carolina: Fall is a feast for the senses around Highlands, N.C., where the Old Edwards Inn and Spa provides spot-on access for leisurely walks and drives through the crisp Smoky Mountains, with forests of color and cascading waterfalls at every turn. Old Edwards Inn's Leaf Looker Package is the perfect plan for leaf ogling, with two nights deluxe accommodations in the Inn or the Lodge, champagne on arrival, a gourmet country picnic lunch for two, a picnic blanket and disposable camera, and a gourmet continental breakfast each morning.
FYI: Rates start at $679 including tax and gratuity, available Oct. 1 to Nov. 15. Visit www.oldedwardsinn.com. North Carolina Foliage Hotline: 800-847-5697
Upstate New York: Adirondack Park provides an inviting, unspoiled backdrop for the finest fall views. Take a hike through the country's largest publicly protected area on Country Walkers' New York: Classic Adirondacks, a six-day walking exploration of the ancient Adirondack range along an extensive trail network through lush forests and breathtaking scenery. Destinations include Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, the park's High Peaks and Central regions, and the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake. Along with walking over moderate terrain, there's optional kayaking, canoeing, sailing and biking, as well as accommodations in comfortable lakeside lodges and cabins with private beaches.
FYI: Rates start at $2,198 per person; departures Sept. 16, 23, 30 and Oct. 14, 2007. Visit www.countrywalkers.com. New York Foliage Hotline: 800-225-5697.
Coastal Maine: It may be known as the Pine Tree State, but Maine still has plenty of fall color to go around through some 17.7 million acres of woodland. Start your sojourn at The Breakwater Inn and Spa in Kennebunkport. A luscious retreat set on the coast where the Kennebunk River meets the Atlantic, the Breakwater's No Leaf Unturned Package includes one night accommodations in a Spa King Deluxe Room, with a continental breakfast, afternoon tea, seafood dinner at Stripers Seafood Restaurant and a $150 spa voucher per person.
FYI: Rates start at $304 midweek or $314 on Friday and Saturday, per person, per night, double occupancy. Visit www.thebreakwaterinn.com. Maine Foliage Hotline: 1-800-533-9595.

One of the most interesting things to me is witnessing people when they make a complete reversal in their lives and overnight become incredibly successful, happy, and fulfilled people. Perhaps the reason this is so fascinating is that it happens so rarely. When this does happen, more often than not, the major life change is related to a career, location, mate, or some other important aspect of the... |
