Getting a Marketing Advertising Job

There are many job opportunities in the marking/ advertising field that need to be filled with highly qualified candidates. Having a bachelor’s degree is preferred and a master’s degree will increase your chances of consideration for many positions. A college degree does not always have to be in your resume for you to be seriously considered for a job in advertising.

There are varieties of different avenues job seekers can pursue if they are looking for a media job in marketing and/or advertising.
One of the reasons why a college degree is not always needed for a job in these fields is because of the creative aspects involved with advertising. There are many creative and innovative employees in these careers who do not have advanced degrees. These are people with unique abilities to think far outside of the box.

There are varieties of different avenues job seekers can pursue if they are looking for a media job in marketing and/or advertising. They can use employment agencies, friends, professors, newspaper ads, and online searches. The most popular and most visible media jobs are those that involve positions in the television or newspaper industry. However, there are many other job opportunities that need people with interest or backgrounds in marketing or advertising positions.

One of the best ways to land that special marketing and advertising job is to have a professional looking resume in addition to a portfolio or your work. If you have been in the field for a year or more, constructing a portfolio of your work makes sense. This creates an opportunity for the job interviewer to get a feel for your marketing and advertising skills and talents.

On the other hand, if you are a recent college graduate with no work experience to offer then you still can create a portfolio that may give you an advantage over some other candidates. You can use some of the work that you did for upper level classes to showcase your ideas and methods. Also remember to have references from instructors and professors in case you need to produce them.

Once you accept a job in advertising, the workload is quite demanding. You should expect to work at least fifty-five hours a week, especially during the first few years. Deadlines and the scale of the projects you will be given are some of the reasons why you will be working overtime. You will also be learning the ropes and learning quite a bit about time management. These advertising jobs are not 9 to 5 jobs in most cases, so you must be willing to put in extra work to get the assignments completed for clients.

Media jobs and jobs in advertising both have some very high turnovers. These jobs hinge on ratings and producing results. Remember that there are many qualified or even more qualified applicants willing and ready to take your position in this type of employment. There is usually intense competition among peers and newly hired employees.

Pay in these types of advertising careers vary but are above average. The work you will have to do will always warrant the salary. You can anticipate a beginning salary of around $40K a year for a job in advertising with a four-year college degree and no previous work experience.

If you have no formal education and are hired for an entry level job in marketing or advertising your beginning salary should be about $30K per year. Depending on the level of your ability and your work performance, some agencies will encourage you to further your education and may even pay cost for the same.

With new technologies being used by people in marketing and advertising, you should learn how to handle a number of different software programs. If you had few classes in college, you will want to definitely increase your knowledge of these tools. There are classes that focus on advertising and marketing software that you can take online and at local colleges. Having extra computer oriented skills to offer prospective employees will make you a serious job contender. Organizations are always looking for employees who are computer literate and the advertising field appreciates those candidates that provide added value from the start.

If you apply, you may even get an internship with one of your favorite companies. This is a good way of getting your foot in the door. Many students have internships while they are still in college and this helps them develop valuable contacts within the industry.

A successful internship will often lead to a job offer with many advertising or media firms. While this is no guarantee of future employment, it is good to keep the thought in mind. Knowing that the work you do could lead to a job should be good incentive to do your best. Even past volunteer work within the advertising industry can be beneficial when it comes to getting that perfect job.

If you have a background in marketing or advertising then you will find many career possibilities listed with AdvertisingCrossing. Here potential job candidates can find many jobs that deal with media employment. Listings are posted that request writers, photographers, and marketers. People seeking jobs are able to browse listings for television and radio announcers and media salespeople.
