There are many different types of advertising jobs; the field of advertising and marketing is a large one, with a wide variety of different roles to be played. Copywriters, art directors, traffic and project managers, graphic artists, layout personnel and of course, advertising sales personnel. For those who have a strong set of people skills and a gift for gab, these advertising sales positions are among the best advertising jobs available. Even within these types of advertising jobs, there are many variations which are possible on the basic job duties of an advertising sales person.

Those engaged in ad sales jobs may work for a local newspaper, radio or television station, or even a website; internet advertising sales jobs are a rapidly growing part of the advertising sector given the large and growing number of businesses establishing a web presence in the effort to tap into this enormous, global market with some businesses existing entirely online. This makes internet advertising sales jobs a good choice for those looking to get into the advertising sales field, even during a difficult economic climate.

Obviously, the primary responsibility of these types of advertising jobs is to ensure that the advertising space available in the publication, television or radio station or website is filled. It’s also important for them to bring in the maximum amount of advertising sales revenue for their employer. Since most media companies are largely reliant, if not entirely so, on ad revenue, advertising sales jobs are considered to be very important within these companies and are also highly desired positions. People who truly enjoy sales think of these jobs as the best advertising jobs which can be had.

An advertising sales person, whether they are employed with the objective of selling print advertising space, radio or television time, or are in internet advertising sales jobs, their duties come down largely to communication and the ability to establish and maintain business relationships with their customers. Account management is a large component of these types of advertising jobs, since it is important to keep the advertising placement customers of the company from being lured away to the competition.

The world of advertising and particularly advertising sales is a fiercely competitive one, so being able to communicate effectively and respond quickly to customer questions and concerns is an essential skill in these types of advertising jobs. While traditionally these communications would be conducted by telephone (and many still are), they are almost as likely to be via email, particularly in the case of internet advertising sales jobs, given that the customer purchasing advertising space may be located on the other side of the world, with the time zone differences involved being such as to make communication by telephone impractical. This means that for advertising sales jobs, both verbal and written communications skills are vitally important.

The duties of an employee engaged in advertising sales will be both to regularly contact current customers, since many advertising placements are done on a continual basis and to get in contact with businesses who may be interested in purchasing advertising space with their employer. As such, an advertising sales person will work closely with the in-house marketing department at the company where they are employed to develop marketing materials for use in selling their advertising space to potential customers.

Naturally, anyone whose business it is to sell advertising space must be able to sell potential advertisers on the merits of placing their ads with their particular media outlet. This will include providing information on the demographics of the market, which the publication, website or broadcaster reaches. Since advertisers will be looking to get the largest possible return on their investment, this is essential.

Internet advertising sales jobs may go about the process of approaching potential new advertisers a bit differently, since these customers may be located anywhere in the world. Internet advertising sales jobs are often done largely online. To reach those businesses who may be interested in advertising with their employer, people in these types of advertising jobs will again work with the marketing department to implement strategies to better reach businesses who may be potential advertisers. This is often done much in the same way as any web based advertising – email marketing campaigns, search engine optimization techniques to increase the likelihood that a potential advertiser will find the advertising space provider, even article marketing and Web 2.0 marketing, which is becoming much more widely used by even traditional media companies in an effort to attract advertisers. Naturally, a website which is selling advertising space is way ahead of the curve on this and these web marketing techniques are likely to be a large part of their own advertising and marketing efforts, to say nothing of advertising sales. In a smaller business, such as is the case with many entirely web based ventures, the advertising sales staff will as likely as not employ these marketing tools along with more conventional methods to attract new advertisers.

People who love to communicate and love to sell will find a career in advertising sales to be a natural fit. With these traits and a solid set of communication skills, you will be well equipped to excel in these types of advertising jobs.
