How to Start a Career in Advertising

by Silas Reed
If you have flair for words and for entertaining people then a career in advertising may be the path for you. It is very important to have your finger on the pulse of the people if you want to be successful in such a field.

If you think about the advertisements that you have heard either on television or on the radio, the ones that stick in your mind are always catchy or pertain to something that means a lot for many people. The advertisers that came up with the slogans or the images that you remember had to know what would attract consumers to the product or message.

Starting a career in advertising requires that you have invested time in getting a higher education or have some very valuable skills that have been marketed and given you definite experience in the field. Potential employees will want to see results when they hire you. They will want to know that you can make a mark on the industry and provide excellent ideas.

You can find out what employers are looking for by expanding your knowledge about the programs that are used to make the most successful advertisements. You will want to know some of the laws and regulations in regards to what can and cannot be used to market a product or service. All of this information can be learned in a college setting in classes that surround the business of advertising.

Once you have the education and are ready to prove yourself in this career, it is time to put together a portfolio to show your prospective clients what you have to offer them. Remember all of the aspects that make a good advertiser.

Your portfolio should show off your unique spin on life and the happenings of the world. You will want to show them photos that you have taken of unique and original items. Combined with the photos should be a sample of your writing abilities.

You want to leave the prospective employers speechless and stunned by the unique spin on things that are commonly overlooked. You want to show them your ability to draw attention and gain interest in things. They will definitely appreciate your ability to relate to people, after all, isn't that what advertising is all about?

They want to hire someone that can bring people from all walks of life to the products and services that they are hired to promote. Advertising is an exciting career path if you have the passion and ability to influence people. You will be paid to recommend or detour people to a product or service by using catchy phrases and images. If you can do this naturally then you should be very successful.

Your appearance to an interviewer is also a very important part of advancing in an advertising career. When you arrive for an interview be sure to arrive on time if not early. When you walk into the building for your interview, be sure to keep you head held high and be prepared to answer all of the questions with confidence.

You will not be successful in getting an offer for a job if you do not appear to be confident in your skills and abilities. Again, an employer wants to hire someone that can come into the position and hit the ground running. They want to get great ideas from someone. If you give the impression that you are not comfortable with your skills and your abilities, the employer will get that vibe and move on to the next applicant.

Be sure to dress to impress when you go for an interview. You want to show the prospective employer that you have it together and will portray a positive image to their clients at meetings or at any other time. If you clothing is wrinkled and dirty you will surely be looked at as disorganized and unprofessional. Keep your hair combed in a neat fashion and be sure to smile and show off your personality.

Careers in advertising are excellent avenues for people that have the gift of persuasion. You will use your gifts to promote ideas and campaigns for a company that will surely appreciate your gift. To get your career moving in the right direction remember to be professional, personal, and show off your talent. Employers will definitely understand your abilities and will want to hire you to work for them immediately.
