Graphic Designing Jobs - A Lucrative Career Option

by Silas Reed
The main aim of advertisements is to attract the attention of the customers and create an urge to buy the particular product. Graphics and images play a vital role in giving final shape to the advertisements. The role of graphic designers is thus an important one. They can find placement in an advertising company or a design house.

A graphic designer is responsible for creating art work using graphic design software and creative skills. Since they have to make use of computers and other technology, they should have proper knowledge about the software as well.
  • Designing logos after understanding client requirements
  • Designing websites according to the industry type
  • Banner designing for advertisements
  • Brochure designing and image editing
  • Designing page layouts for books, magazines and newspapers
  • Meeting clients for project understanding
  • Creating project proposals and client communication
  • Revising and editing design work as per client requirements
  • Managing the team and allocating work if at a senior positions
  • Conducting and attending trainings
Any graphic designer can go for specialization in this field but there are certain basic educational requirements. A bachelor's degree or associate's degree in art and design will just be fine, if you want to start your career as a graphic designer. Good knowledge of fine arts and design concepts will be of great help. It is important to have a few months of training before you try and look for a job in some company. The latest software is used today to create images and graphics. Thus, a graphic designer should know how to use software, such as Photoshop, Corel draw, Illustrator, PageMaker, Fireworks, etc. Programming and Flash knowledge will be an added advantage.

Time is money in every profession and time management is the first skill that every graphic designer should have. You will have to adjust with other people in the organization and thus be ready to work in teams and coordinate with them. Good communication and documentation skills along with interpersonal and organizational skills will help. A designer needs to be creative and should be self motivated. They should pay attention to detail and be patient listeners when discussing projects with team members and clients.

Before one starts working with a company, it will be beneficial if they can gather some experience on your own by designing website templates, editing images and making logos for practice, etc. You can design your graphic design portfolio as this will help you get a good job. Some companies hire new people and keep them on a training basis. If you have worked as an intern it will be a positive point for better job prospects.

This is one of the most sought after careers today and hence competition is also increasing. As more people enter the profession and as technology advances, the scope and the opportunities are also on the rise. This career is lucrative and people who are good at their work can get jobs that pay them handsomely. Advertising is gaining importance in every sector, so it is evident that more graphic designers will be needed. There are opportunities for new people as well as for experienced people.

Graphic designers earn good money and the more experience they gain, the more their salary. The average salary for graphic designers is somewhere around $46,000. Graphic designers are hired by publishing companies, magazines and newspapers. Advertising firms also employ them. Government organizations pay as much as $62,000.

Graphic designing is a comparatively new field and is attracting a lot of people who are good at fine arts and other skills. Computers have made a place in our lives and it is thus easy for people to acquire the skills and give their career a high. If you are good at your work, it is obvious that you will get good work and offers from many companies. Every business needs advertisements and thus, you will have creative and innovative projects to work upon. You will have to decide if you want to work with a company or do independent work as a freelancer.

This is entirely going to be your choice and thus you will be able to mould your career the way you want to. Not just magazines, other print media need graphic designers too; you have good scope in designing websites that are flourishing each day.
