This is a mid-level professional position reporting to the senior manager of Public Affairs, Strategic Communications and Content.

The AIA Public Affairs Manager, in coordination with the senior manager of public affairs, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the AIA’s PR and communications efforts. The public affairs manager is responsible for implementing a broad range of public relations activities associated with AIA’s public outreach campaign.

The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement strategies that reach targeted audiences.

Job Duties:


  • Develop and execute effective social media tactics for AIA’s various accounts that support the overall strategies and goals.
  • Draft content (e.g. blog entries, social media posts, and copywriting) for mass media or websites.
  • Read and aggregate morning news articles for distribution.
  • Become familiar with reporters who often cover our topics.
  • Foster relationships with advocates and influencers on social media and blogs.
  • Pull together social media analytic reports across all channels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to produce copy for advertisements or articles.
  • Perform “damage control” in cases of bad publicity.
  • Assist in development of communication strategies or messages.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities and Training and Experience

  • Demonstrated and strong communications and copywriting skills are required. Experience in social media and project management are important qualities too. Enthusiasm and positive attitude will help you gain the trust of colleagues and external parties alike.
  • Must be a confident communicator and presenter.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Have a full understanding of media needs and media relationships.
  • Be proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate with an attention to detail.
  • Possess the ability to keep information confidential.
  • Tactical understanding of all primary social media platforms.
  • Ability to work in high-stress environments, often for long hours.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management.
  • Experience in web design and content production is a plus
  • Experience in copywriting and editing
  • Solid understanding of project management principles
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, social media platforms, content management systems, like Drupal or Wordpress, and photo editing software is a plus
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills
  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities
  • Proficient command of English and AP Style

Bachelor’s Degree in PR, journalism, communications, marketing, advertising or related field with a minimum of 3-5 years of related experience plus 1-2 years of professional experience with public relations campaigns.
