Your Role as Medical Copy Editor:

A medical copy editor works with copywriters, designers, digital developers, project managers, and account staff to ensure documents are of high quality in terms of scientific content, organization, clarity, accuracy, format, and consistency. The medical copy editor serves as lead editor for assigned brands. He or she performs all levels of editing, including proofreading, copyediting, substantive editing, and data verification/fact-checking. The projects that the medical copy editor works on include (but are not limited to) the following: digital projects, including websites, iPad apps, e-mail campaigns, social media, and banner ads; print projects, such as brochures, advertisements, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities/Execution:

Edits original copy for a variety of consumer and professional health care audiences

Revises medical copy for precision, clarity, and technical/structural accuracy; corrects grammar and spelling

Annotates/fact-checks reference citations for submission to medical/legal regulatory reviews

Creates and maintains a style sheet for assigned accounts; ensures the text is consistent with brand style

Assists with proofreading as needed

Excels in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and is able to manage requirements of multiple accounts without sacrificing accuracy

Identifies materials that require copyright permissions and requests copyright permissions when needed

Takes on additional projects as assigned by the editorial director

Provides guidance to the editorial assistant regarding permissions and other administrative tasks to aid in the efficiency of the Copy/Editorial Department

Ensures accuracy and completeness of reference lists

Serves as subject-matter expert with regard to AMA style, grammar, and usage

Checks text to ensure it is well written and logically structured and in an appropriate style for the intended audience

Checks facts and raises questions with the author of the document; makes sure all copy is understandable and accurate

Creates any documents that support references and claims (i.e., reference binders)

General Qualifications:

Has excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

Works collaboratively with copywriter and team members; completes work independently and according to schedule

Thoroughly understands medical and pharmaceutical terminology

Possesses excellent organizational, multitasking, prioritizing, and problem-solving skills

Highly skilled in English-language rules, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Possesses AMA style expertise and an understanding of FDA regulations for promotional advertising, as well as excellent researching and referencing skills

Has a meticulous approach to their work and a keen eye for detail

Maintains high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines

Anticipates potential MLR/regulatory issues and discusses them with the copy director

Ability to maintain the style of the writer and the brand during copyediting

Ensures high quality of all jobs in terms of scientific content, organization, clarity, accuracy, format, and consistency

Attends all kickoff, status, and other job-related meetings for assigned brands and provides feedback on timelines

Possesses excellent proofreading skills and is willing to help support proofreaders on occasion


At least 3-4 years’ experience as a medical copy editor in an agency environment (healthcare/pharma preferred) reviewing both interactive and print work

Must be computer literate. Must be able to mark up changes using Adobe Acrobat tools, as well as work in word documents

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, writing, or associated field is preferred. ELS certification is optimal
