Joining an industry without knowing it completely is dicey. It could be the right career move, but it could turn out to be a blunder, too. And for some people, such moves could be made too late in their careers to amend the mistakes and clarify the misconceptions.

Advertising is an intriguing career. It fascinates many job seekers, who perceive it as a creative, dynamic, glamorous, and money-filled career. Many of those who join this industry are oblivious to the realities of the advertising field, job profiles, the range of jobs, the opportunities ahead, etc.

In fact, like a career in any other industry-such as automotive or plastics-an advertising career is tough, multifaceted, and challenging. Similarly, like any other organization, an ad agency is a collection of diverse talents, and agencies perform jobs that are combined efforts of planners, designers, production people, marketing people, and finance and HR specialists.

People often associate advertising with photographers, graphic designers, copywriters, and models. All of them are involved with creating ads, yes, but many other professionals in an ad agency work on the creation and execution of ads. To a large extent, advertising is a business whose fundamental activities are to create and deliver purposeful messages and generate revenue from them.

Advertising is certainly one of the most challenging fields and satisfying careers. It is one of those rare careers for which machines will never be able to replace people. Real people will always be in command in this field.

Machines may be unbeatable in data and statistics-related operations, but they cannot match real people in terms of perception and creativity. Moreover, in this field, it is the ability to judge according to circumstances that matters the most, and this is where people excel over machines.

Myths about the advertising industry are harmful to both the industry and job seekers. The advertising industry needs committed professionals for its growth. The truth can dispel the myths surrounding the profession and help candidates decide if they are cut out for this field.
