A layout artist deals with the structure and layout of images and text in a pleasing format for printed media. The job of a layout artist requires graphic communications training in the various types of computer software used in electronic publishing.

Essential knowledge and skills will be necessary to demonstrate at least some of the following within a portfolio submitted for a layout artist position. First the layout artist will need to have excellent and adaptable drawing skills, including a good understanding of composition and perspective. Second the layout artist will need to be able apply good use of light and shadows in a drawing and also be able to follow and established design. The candidate must be neat and disciplined, have computer skills including the understanding of 2D animation process, and an understanding of editing and film structure as well as an understanding of relevant software and post production processes. Personal skills include the ability to communicate clearly with colleagues and work as part of a team. A good advertising layout artist will need the ability to take direction, and have a willingness to address criticism and make changes. He or she will also need to be able to work with little or no supervision and be able to deliver assignments on schedule. As with most advertising positions the layout artist will need the ability to work under pressure. It is likely that layout artists will have gained a degree in an art-related subject such as animation, illustration, and fine art or graphic design. It is more usual for layout artists to have gained some professional experience; usually this experience is gained in illustration. Junior layout artists, without animation experience, need to acquire technical knowledge and may want to take a relevant film course.
