If you go outside and look at your surroundings or stay indoors and watch TV or go online in the Internet, most likely you have come across a few advertisements that try to convince you to buy a certain product or service. Some of these advertisements have wonderful execution, while others could be plain boring and you might be thinking of ways you could make those boring ads better.

Just because most of these ads are made by professional freelancers and companies doesn't mean that you need to be part of an advertising agency in order to share what you have to offer. Advertising is all about using your raw creativity skills in creating a product which can captivate the masses in getting them to buy a product or make use of a service.

There are a few basic steps that you should follow to make sure your ads stand out. Try to follow these steps, and don't forget to apply your own creative techniques. In advertising, you can branch out and try many techniques you want until you master a preferred writing method for creating good ads.

1. Check Out the Existing Ads Present in Your Target Locations

There is no need to worry if you are a late bloomer in the advertising industry, because there are most likely well-placed advertisements already existing, so you don't have to look high and low for new spots until later. In fact, you shouldn't start without checking what competing advertisements have to offer. Even if you have seen them countless times, give them a closer look anyway; it may teach you a lesson or two in advertising. Broaden your horizons by exploring all the places and resources where ads may appear so you can take what is good in all the ads you've seen and make something really good and unique.

2. List a Few Headlines that Stand Out

A good headline is very important for having a captivating ad, because that will be the message that grabs the attention of viewers at a distance and invites them to take a closer look. It needs to be something really catchy, both to you and to the people whom you are targeting. If you followed step 1, you might have a lot of good ideas to try. That is fine, but be sure to be unique to avoid any issues with competitors. In preparation for step 3, create your headline in such a way that it is focused directly on your targeted market. This increases prospective sales opportunities.

3. Aim your Ad Directly at Your Target Market

It is very rare to see ads intended for general audiences. If you do, they usually don't last very long until they are revised to focus on a certain group. This is what you should do early so you can earn sales a lot quicker from the ads you make. Understand who your ads are targeted to and what your readers are expecting. There are a lot of people out there looking for a ''certain something'' and your job is to be that ''something'' and nothing else.

4. Let Your Audience Know Why Your Product or Service Is Unique

You aren't the only one advertising in your area, and when people encounter your ads, the most common response will be to compare the distinctiveness of your ad to others out there. Your ads must respond not by simply stating the facts of your product or service, but by highlighting any unique benefits that your audience will get if they buy your product. If you are having a hard time with this step, see step 5.

5. Offer a Freebie or Two to Make the Deal Sweeter

Your ads can always be better than the ones another local advertising agency made if there is a freebie involved. Emphasizing the word ''Free'' on any ad will surely get viewers curious. Just make sure the freebie is related to whatever you are offering, and of course make sure it is appealing and worthwhile to actually have.

6. Shorten Your Ad While Retaining All the Important Info

This could be a pretty tough step, but if you try hard enough to shorten it, you can be rewarded with far more leads than ever. The average advertisement can be read in a few seconds. During that time people will make a decision whether or not this ad is convincing enough. Making it too lengthy usually leads them to another placed advertisement or complete loss of interest in whatever you are promoting.

7. Always Proofread Your Ad before Publishing

The most embarrassing mistake you can ever commit in this business is creating the right advertisement and finding out after it has been posted that there are spelling or grammatical errors. This can turn down a lot of potential leads, but can be easily fixed if you have a sharp eye for quality by proofreading. If you are not good in that field, you can always have someone else do it.

Writing an advertisement can be surprisingly easy for even newcomers to get into. If you take all of your time following these seven steps and master them, you will find that it can be challenging, but fun and rewarding.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
