Advertising directly influences almost every product and their ultimate success or failure as a commercial enterprise. Though advertising can not make a product better than it is, it can make sure the consumer knows about the product and is motivated to try it and to do that requires a multitude of talented people in advertising jobs from the creative to the administrative.

Though not all jobs in advertising are considered directly creative they all require a creative mind and the ability to communicate a product’s message to the consumer. Advertising jobs draw on the skills of artists, film makers, directors, executives and copywriters and that is just to name a few of the talents in the advertising industry.

Many advertising campaigns are handled by companies that specialize only in advertising campaigns. This creates advertising jobs that are not only directly related to creating the advertising campaign but advertising jobs that are aimed solely attracting and retaining advertising accounts . An advertising campaign is a cooperative effort that begins with the campaign idea; it is communicated to the various department leaders who then put their creative teams to work on it. All of this is coordinated by an advertising director who makes sure the graphics match the text, approves or disapproves various approaches and coordinates the team so the advertising campaign is delivered on time and is approved by the client.



Most middle management and executives in advertising jobs began at a lower level and learned the ropes; some come from the creative department and others from the mail room. Still others are recruited on the basis of proven skills and educational achievements in order to complete the team.

Schooling for Jobs in Advertising

Almost everyone holding jobs in advertising is required to have a college degree. From artists to copywriters to the management personnel the 4 year degree seems consistent. The degree type varies with the specialization of the person and their jobs in advertising and the executive in advertising firm may have a degree in marketing or sales or business administration while the copywriter may have a bachelor degree in journalism. Along with the bachelor degree those who seek advancement into administrative positions in advertising may opt for post graduate degrees in the marketing or administrative field to enhance their chance at one of the higher paying jobs in advertising. Students who major in advertising or marketing may also intern with advertising firms in order to enhance their experience and resume and to develop contacts and references within the advertising industry. Because of the variety of types of jobs in advertising available there is no single degree plan that will suit every advertising job. The administrative director in an advertising job would not require the same degree as the copywriter or artist or film maker advertising jobs.

General Skills Required for Advertising jobs

Though degrees may differ the basics remain the same with all advertising jobs that is the bottom line is getting a message across to the consumer to make them want the product or the service. The artist communicates via visual mediums while the writer uses words but it is all about delivering the message. The administrator, management, director and supervisors all communicate the client’s stated needs, and coordinate that with what is possible in order to deliver advertising campaign that will increase sales. Even though the artist may work only with other artists, these jobs in advertising require communication skills as much as the announcer or the copywriter.

Teamwork is also essential for the individuals interested in advertising jobs. No advertising campaign can be completed from start to finish without a team there are too many aspects in this technical age.

Advertising jobs are usually very well compensated and they are creative outlets for those inclined to draw or write they are also challenging for the director, coordinator and the account executives who are striving to deliver what the client wants which may not always be what they say and these persons have the doubly difficult job of interpreting the client’s needs.

Advertising jobs require a multitude of skills and because upper management jobs are so desirable breaking into the advertising field can be challenging. It can however reward the properly qualified and persistent job seeker with a career in advertising that is not only professionally fulfilling and financially rewarding but continually challenging. The key to success in landing advertising jobs are qualifications Portfolio or experience and to continue to try. Success will be well worth the effort put forth.
